What is light and what can light it do for us? These are questions that has fascinated great minds. Beyond the mundane, entire fields of science, philosophy, medicine and computing have spawned from the mysterious force called light.
In ancient India, it was proposed that light is one of the five fundamental "subtle" elements out of which emerge the gross elements. Another school of Indian thought gave an atomic theory of the physical world on the non-atomic ground of ether, space and time. The basic atoms are those of earth, water, fire, and air. These atoms form the basis of binary molecules that combine further to form larger molecules.
In a University physics course I briefly studied the rudiments of modern light theory, but it is the practical health benefits of light that interest I find truly fascinating. My grandfather was an amateur light therapy enthusiast and read a lot of light therapy books and would constantly buy light therapy gadgets, and extol the health benefits of it.

I recently came across a super new gadget sold by Peter Spiegel and Katie Williams of Sylmark LLC which exploits the therapeutic effects of light - for pain relief. "Light Relief" is one truly innovative product which represents the culmination of years of study of the effects of light on pain. The Light Relief system propagates beams of infrared light which literally penetrate human tissue and stimulate the nervous system and destroy the very source of pain.
